Prominent Ultra Satin is a high performance exterior wall coating with a satin finish based on a blend of propriety pure acrylic binders and fillers that offer excellent flexibility, elasticity, UV and water resistance.

Description

White

Please note: Products can be tinted to any colour at our Paint Centres.

Appearance: Sheen.
Spreading Rate: 7 - 9 m²/litre, dependent on surface texture and porosity.
Solids: ± 55% by mass and ± 40% by volume.
Density: 1,25 kg/litre.
Recommended Dry Film Thickness: 2 coats at 60 µm per coat minimum.
Recommended Wet Film Thickness: 2 coats at 122µm per coat minimum.
Viscosity: ± 87 Kµ (235 grams).
Flash Point: Non-flammable.

Storage:

  • Keep containers properly sealed.
  • Store away from direct heat, sun and severe cold in a place with adequate ventilation.

Available Sizes: 5lt, 20lt
Colours: White and tint bases to tint most of the colours on the tint system.
Life Expectancy: 10-years for specified exterior applications.
Calculated Maximum VOC: 16g/L maximum for white & pastel tinting base.

Features

  • Non-yellowing: Unlike alkyd based paints, whites remain white.
  • Water-based: Easy cleaning, low odour and quick drying.
  • Hardwearing and washable.
  • Resists staining: Easy to clean and remove dirt and grime.
  • Good adhesion: Can be applied to previously coated, sound surfaces.
  • UV Resistant: Does not chalk on outside exposure – normal fading of colours can take place over time.
  • Hairline crack bridging: Permanently hide existing hairline cracks.
  • Water vapour permeable: Allows coating to breathe, allowing moisture to escape, but resist ingress of water into the coating.
  • Can be tinted to specific colour requirements.
  • Lead free and low VOC.

Intended Usages

  • Exterior final coat for new or existing facades (exterior walls).
  • Decorating and protection of correctly prepared and primed cement plaster, concrete, brickwork, fibre-cement, metal and wood substrates.

Application Details

  • Mixing: Stir before use with a flat paddle to an even consistency. Stir occasionally during use to ensure correct application results.
  • Method: Roller, brush.
  • Thinning: Ready to use. Do not dilute.
  • Cleaning: Tap water. Remove as much of the product as possible from the application equipment before cleaning with water.

Conditions:

  • Temperature between 5°C and 40°C.
  • Relative humidity of less than 85%, preferably between 10:00 and 16:00.
  • Ideally apply when the temperature of the substrate is at least 2°C above dew point.
  • If possible away from direct sunlight.

Drying time:
Touch dry - 30 minutes at 23°C.

Recoating time:
4 hours at 23°C. 
Note: Higher temperatures will accelerate the drying times (approximately halved for every 10°C increase), whilst lower temperatures will retard the drying time (approximately doubled for every 10°C decrease).

Requirements:
Two coats.

Surface Preparations
Cement plaster sound with 15% or less moisture:

  • Apply one coat Prominent Dampcure or Prominent Plaster Primer.

Cement plaster sound with 40% or less moisture:

  • Apply one coat Prominent Dampcure diluted 10% with ProGold Mineral Turpentine.
  • Allow 24 hours curing before applying second coat Prominent Dampcure undiluted with 24 hours curing time.
  • Only overcoat once the moisture content proved to be 15% or less.

Fibre Cement:

  • Apply one coat Prominent Dampcure or Prominent Plaster Primer.

Slightly friable plaster:

  • Apply one coat Prominent Surface Restorer and allow curing for 24 hours.
  • Test adhesion of the Prominent Surface Restorer with a cross hatch masking tape test.
  • If suspect apply a further coat of Prominent Surface Restorer.
  • Repeat adhesion test. Only overcoat if good results are achieved.
  • Consult Prominent Paints Technical department if adhesion test failed.

Wood:

  • One coat Prominent Wood Primer.

Mild steel:

  • One coat Prominent Rust Primer.

Galvanised iron:

  • Degrease, etch and clean with ProGold General Purpose Cleaner/water mixture (1:5) and abrasive pad to remove any oily layer and rust.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow drying before applying 1 to 2 coats Prominent Rust Primer.

Sound gloss enamel paint:

  • Sand well to a matt finish, clean with ProGold General Purpose Cleaner/water mixture diluted 1:5 and abrasive pad.
  • Rinse with water and allow drying.
  • Apply one coat Prominent Universal Undercoat.

Sound matt and emulsion paint:

  • Clean with ProGold General Purpose Cleaner/water mixture diluted 1:5 and abrasive pad.
  • Rinse with water and allow drying.
  • Apply directly.

Chalky surfaces:

  • High Pressure water jet cleans the wall to remove the chalk back to sound painted surface.
  • Allow drying before applying one coat Prominent Surface Restorer.

Poor condition surfaces:

  • Strip down and treat as new work.

Walls with moisture related problems:

  • Consult Prominent Paints Technical Service Department.

Limitations

  • The low VOC compliance is applicable on white and pastel tinting bases for batches manufactured from 1 September 2010 onwards.
  • Weather conditions during application should conform to the standard.
  • The surface temperature of the substrate should be between 10ºC and 40ºC and the relative humidity below 85%.
  • Do not apply in freezing conditions, in windy weather, or if rain is likely.
  • PROMINENT ULTRA SATIN is not formulated for interior applications.
  • To ensure a consistent appearance ensure that batch numbers on all the containers are the same.
  • Where the batch numbers differ, intermix before use.
  • Spot touching up over large areas will be noticeable.
  • PROMINENT PAINTS ULTRA SATIN can only be applied to quality undercoats and primers.
  • Cannot be overcoated with non-flexible paints.
  • Spreading rate of 9m² per liter should not be exceeded.

Safety

  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Ensure to maintain good ventilation during application and drying process.
  • In case of skin contact, wash with soap and water or a recognised skin cleaner.
  • Avoid contact with eyes.
  • In case of contact with eyes rinse immediately with running water and seek medical advice.
  • Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for detailed information about the product and transportation and classification criteria. MSDS is available on www.prominentpaints.co.za or from Prominent Customer Service Department.
  • To avoid any risk of spillage, always transport in a secure upright position.
  • If the surface to be painted is asbestos then the preparation, cleaning and/or removal of broken asbestos sheeting needs to be done in compliance to the Asbestos Regulations, 2001 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1993. (ACT NO 85 of 1993). Contact Prominent Paint Technical Department on 0861 776 646 or 011 389 4746 if a copy of the Asbestos Regulations is required.

Tint Bases
The tint base containers are only filled to levels which are specific for each tint base to allow the calculated volume of colourant to be added in order to achieve the volume indicated on the container after tinting. Tint bases and colourants are unfinished products which should not be used on their own. Only once the prescribed colourant is added to the specific tint base will the finished product comply with the technical features and related information as set out in this TDS. 4. The calculated VOC compliance to 16g/L maximum is only applicable to product tinted from Pastel Tinting Base.

Colourant to be used: 
Prominent colourants are lead free specifically formulated for use with Prominent Pro-Matic tinting system. ICC colourants which are lead free using only Prominent supported formulations on Largo 2000.

Pastel Base and Clear Base.
