  • Hairline crack bridging: Excellent flexibility to keep hairline cracks obliterated, when applied at less than 5m²/l.
  • Water vapour permeable: Allows coating to breathe, allowing moisture to escape, but resist ingress of water into the coating.
  • Can be tinted to specific colour requirements
  • Low VOC

Intended Usages

  • Exterior final coat for new or existing facades (exterior walls).
  • Decorating and protection of correctly prepared and primed cement plaster, concrete, brickwork, fibre-cement, metal and wood substrates.

Application Details

  • Mixing: Stir well before use with a flat paddle to a homogenous consistency. Stir occasionally during use to ensure correct application results.
  • Method: Roller and brush.
  • Thinning: Ready to use. Do not dilute.
  • Cleaning: Tap water. Remove as much of the product as possible from the application equipment before cleaning with water.

Application Conditions:

  • Surface temperature between 5°C and 40°C or 2⁰C above dew point, if possible away from direct sunlight.
  • Ambient temperature between 5°C and 40°C
  • Relative Humidity between 10% and 85%
  • Ideally apply when the temperature of the substrate is at least 2°C above dew point, if possible away from direct sunlight.

Drying time:

  • Touch dry: 30 minutes at 23ºC
  • Overcoating: 4h at 23ºC
  • Full cure: 7 – 21 day depending on weather conditions.

Note: higher temperatures will accelerate the drying times (approximately halved for every 10⁰C increase) whilst lower temperatures will retard the drying times (approximately doubled for every 10⁰C decrease).

Requirements: 2 coats minimum.

Surface Preparations
Surfaces must be sound, clean and dry (moisture content below 15%) before painting. Plaster sand to comply with SABS 1090 requirements. Plaster mix must have a minimum thickness of 10mm, free from soft and friable material and comply with SABS 0164-1 for strength (MPA).

New Work Exterior Facades:

  • Cement plaster sound with 15% or less moisture: Apply one coat Prominent Dampcure or Prominent Plaster Primer.
  • Cement plaster sound with 40% or less moisture: Apply one coat Prominent Dampcure diluted 10% with Mineral Turpentine. Allow 24 hours curing before applying 2nd coat Prominent Dampcure undiluted with 24 hours curing time. Only proceed once the moisture contents proved to be 15% or less.
  • Fibre Cement: Apply one coat Prominent Dampcure or Prominent Plaster Primer.
  • Slightly friable plaster: Apply 1 coat Prominent Surface Restorer and allow curing for 24 hours. Test adhesion of the Prominent Surface Restorer with a cross hatch masking tape test. If suspect apply a further coat of Prominent Surface Restorer. Repeat adhesion test. Only proceed if good results are achieved. Consult Prominent Technical department if adhesion test failed.
  • Wood: One coat Prominent Wood Primer.
  • Mild steel: One coat Prominent Rust Primer.
  • Galvanised iron: Apply 2 coats Prominent Rust Primer.

Redecorating Exterior Facedes:

  • Sound gloss enamel paint: Sand well to a matt finish, Clean with General Purpose Cleaner/water mixture diluted 1:5 and abrasive pad. Rinse with water and allow drying. Apply 1 coat Prominent Universal Undercoat.
  • Sound matt and emulsion paint: Clean with General Purpose Cleaner/water mixture diluted 1:5 and abrasive pad. Rinse with water and allow drying. Apply directly.
  • Chalky surfaces: High Pressure water jet cleans the wall to remove the chalk back to sound painted surface. Allow drying before applying one coat Prominent Surface Restorer.
  • Poor condition surfaces: Strip down and treat as new work.
  • Walls with moisture related problems: Consult Prominent Technical Service Department.

Limitations

  • The low VOC compliance is applicable on White and colour mixed from Controlled White for batches manufactured from 1 September 2016 onwards.
  • Weather conditions during application should conform to the Standard. The surface temperature of the substrate should be between 10ºC and 40ºC and the relative humidity below 85%. Do not apply in freezing conditions, in windy weather, or if rain is likely.
  • Wet film thickness measurements (WFT) need to be done with a good quality WFT comb, immediately after application, and serves as a guide to verify WFT during application. Only dry film thickness (DFT) measurements can be used as part of the quality control process.
  • PROMINENT PAINTS ULTRA SHIELD can’t be used for interior applications.
  • To ensure a consistent appearance ensure that batch numbers on all the containers are the same. Where the batch numbers differ, intermix before use.
  • Spot touching up over large areas will be noticeable.
  • PROMINENT PAINTS ULTRA SHIELD can only be applied to quality undercoats and primers.
  • Cannot be overcoated with non-flexible paints.
  • Spreading rate of 5m² per liter should not be exceeded.

Characteristics

  • The tint base containers are only filled to levels which are specific for each tint base to allow the calculated volume of colourant to be added in order to achieve the volume indicated on the container after tinting.
  • Tint bases and colourants are unfinished products which should not be used on their own.
  • Only once the prescribed colourant is added to the specific tint base will the finished product comply with the technical features and related information as set out in this TDS.
  • The calculated VOC compliance to 16g/L maximum is only applicable to product tinted from White Base.
