Intended Usages

  • Primer onto firm, rusted metal surfaces.
  • Primer onto weathered galvanised iron.
  • Primer onto weathered, oil free metal.

Application Details

  • Mixing: Stir before use with a flat paddle to an even consistency. Stir occasionally during use.
  • Method: Roller, brush or airless spray.
  • Thinning: Not recommended.
  • Cleaning: Remove as much of the product as possible from the application equipment before cleaning with tap water when wet, ProGold Lacquer Thinners when dry.

Conditions:

  • Temperature between 5°C and 40°C.
  • Relative humidity of less than 85%, preferably between 10: 00 and 16: 00.

Drying time:
1 hour.
Note:  Higher temperatures will accelerate the drying times (approximately halved for every 10°C increase), whilst lower temperatures will retard the drying time (approximately doubled for every 10°C decrease).

Recoating time: 4 hours.

Overcoating time:
 24 hours.

Requirements: Two coats or more depending on measle corrosion test results.

Surface Preparations
Rusted & New metal:

  • Remove all rust mechanically, degrease with ProGold General Purpose Cleaner/water mixture (1: 5) and abrasive pad.
  • Rinse with running water or high pressure water, allow to dry and apply 2 coats.

Weathered galvanised iron:

  • Loose rust and oxidation must be mechanically removed.
  • Clean with ProGold General Purpose Cleaner/water mixture (1: 5) and abrasive pad to a water break-free surface.
  • Rinse well and allow drying before applying 2 coats.

New galvanised iron:

  • Remove fabricators pre-treated oil and any other contamination with ProGold General Purpose Cleaner/water mixture (1: 5) and abrasive pad to remove any oily layer or oxidation and rinse thoroughly with portable water, allow drying.
  • Ensure that a water break-free surface is obtained.
  • Apply one coat Prominent Galvanised Iron Primer.

Measle corrosion test:

  • Prepare the surface as set out under new work.
  • Apply to a test area one coat and to another test area a two coat applications of Prominent Rust Primer Grey. Allow to dry.
  • Overcoat the test areas with white PVA and allow drying for 4 hours.
  • If rust spots are visible on the 1 coat application of Prominent Rust Primer, but not the two coat application, then two coats would be required.
  • If rust is still visible on the two coat application, then either more sanding is required to flatten the rust peaks or a third coat of Prominent Rust Primer is required.

Previously Painted Surfaces with Rust:

  • Remove all paint back to bare surface in rusted areas.
  • Treat as new work.

Limitations

  • Must be used only as a primer, not as a finishing coat.
  • Exterior surfaces must not be exposed to rain within 12 hours of application.
  • Application conditions must be adhered to.
  • Prominent Rust Primer should not be overcoated with Prominent Machinery enamel products and strong solvent products e.g. Prominent 2-Pack Polyurethane floor coating.
  • Product not UV resistant.
